Activation

Activation is the action of starting the OPC Classic server.

Activation security is unique to DCOM. The DCOM framework provides the ability for an OPC Classic client to access the OPC Classic server object. If the OPC Classic server object is installed on another computer node, then the framework activates the OPC Classic server on behalf of the client (if it is not already running).

Activation permission checking works the same as authorization permission checking. An authenticated client's user identity is checked against the OPC Classic server's access control list (ACL) for launch permissions. Activation permissions for the OPC Classic Server are setup using DCOMCNFG.
